ASTM A500 STRUCTURAL TUBING SPECIFICATION AND SCOPE

Since ASTM A500 is a structural specification, round pipe HSS produced to this specification is a fit for applications being used in structural applications and general construction use. The tolerances of A500 are tighter than those of A53, therefore the A500 round pipe HSS has more quality and less variability than A53. Round HSS pipe has a superior surface finish and does not come with a lacquer coating. A500B Structural Pipe is manufactured for use in applications that demand greater strength, closer tolerances, and a superior finish. This product is an excellent choice for painted applications.

HYT offers A500 structural steel tubing in a range of sizes and shapes. The ASTM A500 specification covers cold-formed welded and seamless

ASTM A500 STRUCTURAL TUBING ADVANTAGES/DISADVANTAGES

A500 steel is easy to weld and machine, can be cold worked, and features a pleasing appearance. Specifically, A500 steel is similar to A53 in popularity and use, but it has a higher yield strength, is more corrosion resistant, and has a greater strength-to-weight ratio. As a result, it is more expensive than A53 grade steel.

Chemically and structurally, A500 better resembles A36 steel. The major difference between the two is in their use. Though both are hot rolled steel, A36 has many shapes and types, including rectangular bar, round bar, round tube, square bar, angle, channel, plate, tread plate, and shafting. A500 on the other hand is just used for metal pipes and tubes albeit these can be round, square, or rectangular.

A500’s primary advantage is its relative strength. Consequently, this steel grade works well for structural applications such as pipes, tanks, boilers, and heavy-duty equipment. The metal’s major disadvantage is its relative heat intolerance. It will shatter rather than shape at high temperatures.

ASTM A500 STRUCTURAL TUBING MACHINING

Easy to machine and fabricate, A500 grade steel can be bent into nearly any shape without crimping. It will maintain its strength without cracking.

ASTM A500 STRUCTURAL TUBING WELDING

A500 can be cold-formed welded. Welders who are certified D1.3 by the American Welding Society must follow AISI S100 standards to cold-form weld A500 steel.

This steel grade can also be formed by all standard, conventional welding methods. Generally, pre-heat and post-heat treatment is advisable.

ASTM A500 STRUCTURAL TUBING HEAT TREATMENT

Forge at 2350 to 1800 F, do hot work at 900 to 200 F, and temper at 600 to 1100 F. Heating A500 grade steel to 1500 – 1600 F and water quenching will harden the metal.

Available Technique of Steel Pipe

HYT specializes in two primary steel pipe manufacturing techniques: seamless and welded. Each method offers unique manufacturing processes and applications, ensuring we can meet the diverse needs of various industries.

Seamless Steel Pipes

Seamless steel pipes are manufactured through processes such as hot rolling, cold rolling, or cold drawing. These methods start with a solid steel billet, heated and formed under high temperature and pressure to create a tube without any welded seams. The main advantages of seamless pipes lie in their uniformity and strength, making them ideal for high-pressure, high-temperature environments, or other demanding conditions. Due to their seamless nature, these pipes exhibit higher integrity and resistance to cracking under internal and external pressures.

Welded Steel Pipes

In contrast to seamless pipes, welded steel pipes are produced through methods like Electric Resistance Welding (ERW), Submerged Arc Welding (SSAW), or Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welding (LSAW). These processes involve curling steel sheets or coils into a tubular shape and welding them at the seam. The advantages of welded pipes include cost-effectiveness and the ability to manufacture large diameters and thick-walled pipes, crucial for many structural and transportation applications.

Pipe End Processing
At HYT, we offer comprehensive end processing services for steel pipes to cater to diverse industrial applications. Our customized processing options include:
Plain End: This finish provides a clean and smooth end cut, ideal for applications requiring welding or other types of connections. Plain end pipes are suitable for various fluid transmission systems, ensuring seamless integration into pipelines.
Bevelled End: Bevelled ends are prepared to facilitate easier welding, especially in extensive pipeline setups. The angle of the bevel can be customized according to specific client requirements to optimize welding strength and quality.
Threaded End: Threaded end processing allows for steel pipes to be connected via threads, eliminating the need for welding. This connection method is easy to install and maintain. We offer a variety of thread specifications to match different interfaces and pressure requirements, making it a quick and reliable choice during installation.
